CCTV recorder devices today are much different from their analog counterparts, some years ago (and today to a limited degree) camera feeds from a surveillance system were stored on video tape. Analog security recorders still have their uses however the medium used for storing video (tape) can take up a lot of space if the recording system is active 24 hours a day. Large businesses such as casinos and department stores would need a dedicated storage space for the purpose of archiving footage on video tape. Today’s security recorders on the other hand are quite different as the devices are digital and no longer rely on tape cassette of reels of tape to record video.
Today’s digital video recorders often have a multitude of storage mediums available for storing video, typically the devices contain hard drives that have very little difference to those found in a run of the mill personal computer. As hard drive technology has advanced they are able to store a lot more information. This means owners of digital video recorders can leave their devices set to record for months on end without needing to swap or change the video storage device.
Modern digital video recorders share many of the same hardware interfaces and tools found on modern PC’s, it’s not unusual to find a DVR that has USB ports. The USB port on a DVR can be used for connecting external storage devices such as CD or DVD ROM drives, memory cards and external hard drives to the system. In some cases the USB port can be used for connecting external joysticks to the DVR designed for precision camera control, you can also use some DVR USB ports to attach other controllers to the system such as external keyboards and mice. You will also find security recorders that have operating systems such as UNIX and Windows that are used to control the devices functions.
Another advantage commonplace in today’s digital video recorders is the fact that many include Ethernet ports (RJ45 sockets), this gives the user the ability to connect the DVR to a local area network or to the Internet. By connecting the DVR to a broadband router through its Ethernet port DVR owners can connect their systems to PC’s on the same network and then use their data storage devices for storing surveillance camera footage. When most security recorders are connected to a network you also have the ability to control the system remotely and monitor its attached cameras. Remote monitoring is very useful if you want to be kept appraised about events that transpire on your premises while you are away.
Finding specific surveillance camera footage is also a lot simpler with digital video recorders as many of them categorize video footage into what are known as ‘events’. Many security DVR’s are capable of displaying recorded events almost instantaneously with the use of their event playback features, by entering the date or time of a logged event a digital video recorder can display what was recorded at the specified date and time. DVR technology has made significant advances over a short period of time, their popularity is growing and the cost of the devices are falling into a category suitable for small businesses and home owners.

Earlier, videos from multiple security cameras were recorded on time-lapse VCRs and multiplexers, but nowadays, due to technological advancements, the digital video recorders (DVRs) have started replacing the multiplexers and VCRs. A Security DVR camera is simply a digital video recorder which is designed to be used as a surveillance tool. The DVR security camera systems record the video on a hard drive-based medium, eliminating the need for a videotape. A security DVR system is a sophisticated system that has the ability to manage multiple cameras at the same time. It can also record and playback the video locally or through the internet.
Security DVR systems can be classified into PC-based models and Stand-alone units. The PC-based models contain advanced features like face recognition, missing object detection, and unattended object detection. While the stand-alone units offer simultaneous viewing, recording, backup and playback capabilities to the users. The PC-based DVR systems convert analog signals to digital signals and then compress these signals, which are then stored on a hard drive for archiving and playback. On the other hand, Stand-alone units are highly efficient and are the best options for home security. The video in these is less compressed as compared to PC-based systems and can be operated by the simple push of a button and does not require the use of a PC.
The security DVR system also supports internet viewing and is available in 4, 8, 9 or 16 channel units. These systems provide detailed images and crystal clear video that do not degrade. They also allow the users to record video for a longer period of time, which can be paused without distorting the picture. The digital video recorders are thus, easy and inexpensive to set up and are a perfect option for performing surveillance for the user’s home or office.
